Ubisoft – PS4, Xbox One, PC
Assassin’s Creed has been a massive franchise for years, but the last few years have felt like the games were ‘more of the same’. With Origins, Ubisoft managed to open a new door with an experience system and tier-ranked items. Does Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey manage to continue the positive trend and convince us to invest time and money in it?
Odyssey takes place in ancient Greece, in contrast to ancient Egypt in the previous game. The game tells the tale of the war between the Athens and the Spartans. You take on the role of Alexios or Kassandra, descendants of Spartan king Leonidas I.
History has taken a prominent position in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, as is the case with Odyssey. It almost feels like you’re walking through ancient Greece as you spot legendary landmarks and meet famous persons. The characters feel real and the vibrant colours even make the world lively.
Taking a stealthy approach or fighting multiple enemies at once using combos is up to you. A game with the word assassin in it invites you to choose option A quicker though.
The leveling system and tier-ranked items are back, with a lot of them to be acquired and some with better stats than others, letting you choose your appearance and play-style.
Abilities that focus on three different categories including hunter, warrior, and assassin, each benefitting the different play-styles they are named after.
Naval battles have returned as well and the game features the option of adding crew and leaders to your ship, enhancing your battles at sea.
The open world has you exploring, questing, and enjoying the lands that are called Greece.
Worth investing because
- Big open world with naval battles
- Customization options are plenty
- Different enemy levels make the game more challenging
- Abilities that enhance the way you want to play the game
Not worth investing because
- Slight improvement over Origins
- Microtransactions are featured in the game
- After a while the missions might feel repetitive and the world too familiar, as you’ve been roaming it for a while
Odyssey has been released for a while now and there have been price drops for it, making it more appealing to those wanting to save time and money. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey features bang for the buck and is sure to have you spending a lot of time in a world known for the stories written about it.
